Frequently Asked Questions
What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of United Nations committees. Students, referred to as delegates, apply skills in negotiation and research with knowledge in international relations through the representation of nations at university or high school hosted conferences.
Who participates in Model United Nations?
Students from middle school to university participate in Model UN, with around 150,000 high school students participating annually in the US. Notable figures – from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to actor Samuel L. Jackson – participated and benefited from Model UN.
Why should I participate in Model United Nations?
While participation in Model UN highlights advanced levels of knowledge in international and political issues affecting the world today, it also increases the capacity for students to engage in problem solving, negotiation, research, and communications. Universities recognize the value and importance of participation in Model UN during the college application process.
What is a typical day at a Model UN conference?
Every delegate’s goal is to pass mock resolutions in their respective committee, benefiting their country’s policies. After a series of formal and informal discourse, students use a combination of public speaking and interpersonal skills to write and vote on resolutions. At the end of a conference, exceptional delegates are given awards.
What do Model UN committees simulate?
Typically, conferences simulate committees such as the UN Security Council or the Disarmament and International Security committee (DISEC). However, Model UN committees aren’t restricted to only simulating UN bodies. Conferences can feature committees like the US National Security Council, NATO, WHO, and more.
How long is an average model un conference?
Most conferences are 2 days long and take place over weekends. Travel conferences are usually 3-4 days long from Thursday/Friday to Sunday.
